We’ve all been there—standing in the middle of a room, feeling that familiar itch to declutter, but immediately feeling defeated by the sheer volume of "stuff”, not to mention the other tasks taking priority. When you’re living a busy life, the idea of a weekend-long "marathon" purge feels less like a refresh and more like a second job.
With spring just one week away (& spring break ahead for families), it’s the perfect time to put a space refresh on the docket. We’re going to call it the “Clutter Shakedown”. For parents out there entering spring break with your kids, this isn’t more work for you, you’re going to enlist the kids! It’s not about emptying every drawer at once and clearing things in one afternoon; it’s about high-impact, but consistent bite-sized wins that help your space (and your brain!) breathe again.
Let’s dive into how you can shake off the excess in less than an hour each day.
1. The 15-Minute "Stage-Based" Sort
The secret to not getting overwhelmed is staying small. Pick one tiny "stage"—maybe it’s the junk drawer, the cabinet under the bathroom sink, or the entryway. Starting with a particularly bothersome area will likely give you motivation to go start to finish on it, and fuel you for the next area!
Set a timer for 30 minutes— your goal is to master just that one space. By breaking a large project into these manageable windows, you prevent the "mid-project mess" that often leads to us giving up halfway through.
2. No Piles Left Behind
One of the biggest pitfalls of decluttering is creating "decision piles" that sit on the floor for weeks. In the Shakedown, we’re going to use a Immediate Action Rule.
If you touch an item, you must decide its fate right then and there. It goes into one of three places:
- Its Rightful Home: If it belongs in another room, take it there now.
- The Donation Box: A designated bin or bag kept by the door.
- The Trash/Recycle: High-five yourself as you let it go!
By refusing to let piles form, you ensure that your 30-minute session leaves the room looking better than when you started.
3. Seasonal Forward-Thinking: The Winter Wind-Down
Since we’re in that "bridge" season, now is the perfect time to address the winter gear that’s been working hard for the last few months. Before you tuck everything away, do a Reality Check.Ask yourself:
- "Did I actually wear these boots this season?" * "Is this coat still in good repair, or did I avoid wearing it because of a broken zipper?"
If a piece of winter gear didn’t make the cut this year, don't pay the "space tax" to store it until next November. Donate those heavy parkas or gently used boots now while they can still help someone else through the remaining chilly weeks!
4. Prep for the "Big Sleep"
For the items you are keeping, give them a little TLC before they go into storage. Wash the salt off your boots and ensure all coats are freshly laundered and completely dry.
Pro Tip: Storing items while they're still even slightly damp is a recipe for mildew. Make sure everything is bone-dry before sealing those bins. If you need some more storage hacks for these bulky items, check out our past post here!
5. The Instant Win
If you’re feeling stuck on Day 1, start with your most-used surface. Usually, this is the kitchen island or the entryway console or closet. Clearing a surface that you look at dozens of times a day provides an "instant win" that triggers a hit of dopamine, making you much more likely to show up for Day 2! The goal is to continue a streak of 30-minutes focus declutters, until you feel your space is properly set to restfully move into Spring!
Organizing doesn't have to be a grand gesture. It’s the small, consistent rhythms that create a home where you can truly find rest.
Ready to start your Shakedown? As always, if the overwhelm feels a bit too heavy, our RTB teams are just a call away to help you find your room to breathe.
Happy Clutter Shakedown!
