We have a pretty phenomenal team here at Room to Breathe, so we figured it would be time well spent to take a moment and formally introduce everyone - sharing a bit about what they love, and uncovering some of the behind-the-scenes magic that makes Room to Breathe thrive.
Today, we have Kristen Walling. Based in Calgary, Kristen is our resident closet expert, outdoor adventurer, true-crime podcast enthusiast, and ultra-detailed professional home organizer!

What do you love about organizing?
When we begin with a new client we always tell them to trust the process and that things will likely look worse before they get better (and they do always get better.) I love being able to help our clients through this process and to make every step a little easier for them. I love the hands on work, I love helping people find a new sense of calmness in their home.
How did you get started?
I began by organizing for my parents. They have a large storage room and needed some help, after a few days of organizing I wondered if this was something I could do as my full-time job. I was excited to find Room to Breathe on google and instantly knew I wanted to be a part of the team.
I started with RTB in 2017, and was set up for success through training by Indianna. I have enjoyed this unconventional job so much and I hope to continue to help clients for many years to come.
What’s your favourite space to organize? Where does your organizing light shine the brightest?
My specialty is closets, I have been told I can fold a mean shirt. I love to transform a closet into an area where our clients can fall in love with their wardrobe again. I like to bring forward and showcase special items from their wardrobe that may have otherwise gotten lost or pushed to the back.I enjoy how bringing in a few simple products can transform a closet or a dresser - something as small as a scarf hanger or dividers in a drawer can make a big difference and help you to keep your new organization system in place.
What’s your best organizing tip/life hack?
Having an 'Active' file has been a game changer for me. This is a simple and mobile filing system for any mail that comes in. You may have tabs such as; Coupons, Action Required, School, Home, Banking, etc. This filing system helps to take care of those piles that seem to accumulate in high traffic areas where mail just floats around.
What is your favourite way to unwind? What do you do for self-care?
I unwind by listening to true crime podcasts, lighting a candle, and cleaning my house. Once the house is clean then I can relax and watch a movie. For self-care I always make time for my skin care routine, to me it is the best way to start and end my days. Oh and also cuddling with my dog.
What are some of your favourite local businesses?
A local instagram business that I really like is @YYC.Thrift.Boutique (instagram.com/yyc.thrift.boutique). They post thrifted items on their instagram where you can purchase them and do contactless pick up. It is a good way to see interesting items you would find in a thrift store all from the comfort of your home/phone.
I also love Cinder and Sage (cinderandsage.com) It is the one stop shop for everything you didn’t know you needed in your life. You can find unique home decor, jewelry, skin care and much more. It’s a very special shop and you must check it out if you’re in yyc.
What’s one thing on your bucket list?
Traveling through Europe, taking in the sights while enjoying pasta and wine along the way.
What’s the best book you’ve read lately?
I loved the The Lovely Bones (written by Alice Sebold). This is the type of book that really grabs a hold of you and you end up staying up way too late reading because you can’t put it down!
